“My experiences this summer can only be described as life-changing, with the Pratt in Venice program surpassing my wildest expectations and having a transformative impact on my art and studies and myself as a person.“
“Pratt in Venice was an experience like no other. Through the act of visiting and seeing these works in person, we were able to foster a deeper understanding of creators and artists of that time.”
“The program turned out to be quite an experience. I learned a lot about Venetian art and culture, about Pratt and the students there as well as a lot about myself.”
“Pratt in Venice gave me the opportunity of a lifetime to live like a Venetian, and Venice has become my home away from home.”
Together with Prof. Diana Gisolfi and Prof. Joe Kopta we visited churches and museums all over Venice, which were absolutely outstanding. Tiziano, Tintoretto, Veronese, Carpaccio… We saw countless of these masters’ works.
I am left now with so much at my fingertips. Whether it be connections, friendships, memories, knowledge, interest, or the most invigorating of all: passion. Venice is oozing with that stuff, and now I am too.
Whether in class or out and about in Venice—in the mysterious, detail-rich maze that is the city—I made memories I hold very dear.
When you come to Venice you’re immediately immersed in culture and history. It is overwhelming and it is spectacular. The elegant city is romantic and breathtaking.
“I hold those six weeks very close to my heart, not only because of the beautiful memories I made along the way, but because of the life-changing learning opportunities that the trip provided me with.”
I can promise you that the skills I learned, the people I worked with, and my memories of Venice will influence my work for years to come.
Anyone who has gone on a study abroad will tell you that it was an irreplaceable experience, that it changed their lives. I believed these people but didn’t fully understand this until attending the Pratt in Venice program.
During this time I was able to work on my oil painting; I painted landscapes on the Venetian lagoon!
I admire how much effort Diana has made for this program, and appreciate all the classmates and faculty with whom I had amazing times. Pratt in Venice provides such a precious opportunity for Fine Arts students like me.
The expertise that Diana and Joe bring to the curriculum is unparalleled, and their excitement for the city and its art and architecture make the classes extremely interesting.
Pratt in Venice was like a backstage pass to some wonderful places in Venice and the surrounding area. From the mosaic workshop at the basilica of San Marco to the restoration lab at UIA, we were able to access work spaces and watch conservators handle delicate works of art.
For an artist or student of art history, Venice is like no other city.
Pratt in Venice proved to be a refreshing experience that kept me engaged with Venetian culture and with my own art practice. The trips and tours are stripped of the fluff and filled to the brim with interesting insights. There is so much to see; the canals, the streets, the churches and the surrounding countryside all provided a stunning view and a moment of pause.
I definitely felt like I was not only challenged by my professors, but also by my fellow students. The group as a whole was definitely invested in our studies and I think that pushed me farther in my work.
To say this trip was incredible would be an understatement. With traveling to Italy being my first time crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the trip was life-changing for me.
After graduating from Pratt’s Creative Arts Therapy program, I was thrilled for the opportunity to immerse myself in art-making, history, and culture in Venice, Italy. I could have guessed that my experience would be a nurturing and amazing one from the moment of arrival.
From the on-site class sessions throughout Venice and study trips to nearby towns and villas, to the excitement of studying a real Venetian manuscript in person for my own research, to the ebb and flow of daily Venetian life – it was a life-changing experience.
Painting in Venice was a surreal experience. With UIA's ideal location at the water's edge, its impressively beautiful building, a travel catalogue view from the studio, and the most amazing and accommodating caretaker, Massimo, my experience as a graduate painting student and assistant was beyond incredible.
Being in a city where the architecture is artful and the makers drive the economy, I can’t imagine a better place to learn and live while producing inspired works of art.
Studying and living in Venice was sogni diventati realtà, truly a dream come true. I had never lived abroad before and could not wait to experience being immersed in a foreign culture.
Bright, saturated colors found their way into my art, a surprising contrast to the monochromatic work I’d been doing previously.
From the moment we arrived in Venice, we never had a dull moment. Just walking or taking the vaporetto around the city felt like an adventure in itself, and I found my head swiveling eagerly in every direction on the vaporetto ride from the train station.
It’s not just the incredible beauty of Venice that seduces us, but its history, art and architecture that makes this experience not to be missed.
Of course I was impressed, if not overstimulated, to draw and paint the City of Water, but more importantly, my understanding of art history as been completely revolutionized.
